San Francisco is 5-0, Washington is 1-3-1, and the 49ers are 7.5-point favorites. Yet the most interesting part of Monday night’s matchup is how much closer these offenses look than those records suggest. Washington’s case for staying competitive starts with moving the ball—and depends on a defense that hasn’t given its offense much room for error.
The gap is bigger on defense
Our grades give both offenses an A-, while San Francisco holds the defensive advantage, B- to C. That’s a useful way to frame this matchup: the Commanders have an attack we rate highly, but the 49ers offer the more balanced package.
Our yardage projections also suggest a smaller gap than the teams’ records might lead you to expect: roughly 340 total yards for San Francisco and 320 for Washington. The Commanders have the higher rushing projection, about 134 yards to 119. That gives Washington a plausible route to sustained offense rather than relying entirely on Jayden Daniels matching Brock Purdy through the air.
Daniels showed what his running can add in Sunday’s 27-27 tie with the Giants, throwing for 199 yards and rushing for 103 yards and two touchdowns. But Washington also surrendered a two-touchdown fourth-quarter lead. That combination—an offense capable of creating separation and a defense unable to preserve it—is the tension the Commanders bring into this game.
Unbeaten hasn’t meant effortless
San Francisco has covered the spread in four of five games this season, returning a profit of 2.72 units on flat one-unit bets. Still, its latest win was a reminder that winning and winning comfortably are different challenges. The 49ers edged Seattle 32-29 on Sunday, with Purdy directing two fourth-quarter scoring drives.
That game also featured seven combined turnovers. Two Seattle giveaways handed San Francisco touchdown drives starting inside the Seahawks’ 20, and another produced a defensive touchdown. Purdy delivered late, but the final score wasn’t simply the product of an offense marching the length of the field all afternoon.

What matters at a total of 52.5
DraftKings’ total of 52.5 puts a substantial scoring expectation on this matchup. Washington’s games have gone over the total in four of five games this season, and its weaker defensive grade offers a clear reason to take San Francisco’s scoring potential seriously. We also rate both offenses highly.
Those Washington overs came against totals ranging from 40.5 to 51.5, all below this week’s number. And while the Giants game went to overtime, all 54 points were scored in regulation. The late defensive collapse matters more to this scoring outlook than the extra period itself.
San Francisco’s latest result needs a different adjustment: Seattle’s turnovers supplied short fields and a defensive touchdown. Those plays show how scoring can climb quickly, but make that 32-point performance less persuasive as evidence of sustained offensive production at this week’s higher total.
Friday’s practice reports also matter to that outlook. Washington running back Jacory Croskey-Merritt didn’t practice because of a groin injury, while Rachaad White was limited with a shoulder injury and Stefon Diggs was limited with a hamstring injury. For San Francisco, Mike Evans didn’t practice because of ribs/Achilles issues. Those limitations leave important contributors to Washington’s rushing case and both teams’ passing attacks worth monitoring ahead of Monday.
The matchup comes back to Washington’s stops
San Francisco’s stronger defense and four covers in five games give its favorite status substance beyond an unbeaten record. Washington’s offensive grade, competitive yardage projections and Daniels’ rushing ability provide the counterweight. The Commanders have a credible route to staying competitive, but it requires pairing that production with defensive stops they couldn’t deliver late against the Giants. At 52.5, the strong attacks deserve attention; the lower totals behind Washington’s over record and the turnover help behind San Francisco’s latest win keep that scoring case from being straightforward.
