Miami has enough scoring talent to be favored in Charlotte, but can it get enough stops to justify that confidence? The Heat enter Saturday’s game at 0-2 after allowing 259 points in their first two outings, while the Hornets are coming off a 47-point loss. With Miami a 3.5-point favorite at DraftKings, this matchup asks which team’s early problems are more likely to carry over.
Miami needs more than another big Giannis night
Giannis Antetokounmpo delivered 36 points and 12 rebounds Friday, yet Detroit still beat Miami 128-111. The Pistons led throughout, and the Heat got little scoring help from two other prominent starters: Bam Adebayo finished with four points after first-half foul trouble, while Klay Thompson scored six on 2-for-11 shooting.
Our grades capture the split in Miami’s outlook: a B+ offense paired with a C defense. That gives the Heat a credible scoring advantage, but their first two games show why offensive talent alone hasn’t been enough. Minnesota scored 131 against them in the opener before Detroit put up 128.
Charlotte offers a different challenge. We give the Hornets a B defensive grade but a C on offense. That makes this less straightforward than a favorite facing a team fresh off a blowout: our assessment still gives Charlotte’s defense a chance to keep the game competitive, even after Friday’s rough result.
Charlotte’s shooting is the key counterweight
Atlanta hammered Charlotte 128-81 on Friday, forcing 14 first-half turnovers. Brandon Miller scored six points and went 1-for-11 from three, leaving him 4-for-25 from beyond the arc through two games. Against a Miami team that hasn’t defended well, cleaner possessions and better shooting give the Hornets a plausible route back into contention.
Our three-point projections offer a useful contrast to that cold start: we project Charlotte to make about 17 three-pointers, compared with about 14 for Miami. That’s a meaningful source of scoring for the Hornets if it materializes. It also puts Miller’s shooting in focus without assuming an automatic bounce-back.
Charlotte also has backcourt availability concerns. Coby White (calf) and Kon Knueppel (hamstring) missed Friday’s game and carry day-to-day labels in the latest updates. Their availability matters to a team trying to steady its scoring, although those reports don’t establish whether either will play Saturday.

Why the 230.5 total has competing pressures
Miami’s defensive start puts upward pressure on the 230.5-point total, particularly with our projections anticipating a much more productive three-point night from Charlotte. But the Hornets’ scoring troubles push the other way: they managed 110 points in their opening win at Brooklyn before dropping to 81 against Atlanta. Charlotte’s stronger defensive grade also offers a counterweight to Miami’s scoring potential. Both teams are playing for the second straight night; Miami must travel after Friday’s home game, while Charlotte stays home.
The longer betting history points in different directions, too. Over the past year, 53 of 85 Charlotte games finished under their totals, while 48 of 84 Miami games went over. Those histories span different schedules and prices, but the contrast is another reason not to let Friday’s lopsided results settle the outlook for 230.5.
The matchup’s most useful test
Miami’s stronger offensive grade supports the case for its favorite status, but creating separation requires more than another productive Antetokounmpo performance. The Heat need to make Charlotte work harder for its scoring. For the Hornets, the strongest counter is a cleaner game and the three-point production our projections anticipate, with their defensive grade offering another reason they could stay close. Charlotte’s perimeter shooting is the clearest pressure point: a rebound there would test Miami’s ability to pull away and strengthen the upward scoring pressure, while continued struggles would leave the Hornets relying more heavily on their defense.
