Kraken vs. Lightning preview: Seattle’s road streak meets a steep price

Seattle has won three straight road games, yet Tampa Bay remains a substantial favorite for Thursday’s matchup. That’s the interesting tension here: the Kraken have delivered better early results than their underdog status might suggest, while our analysis still rates the Lightning more highly at both ends of the ice. The useful question is how much separation the matchup supports—not simply which team has been winning lately.

Winning games and rewarding bettors aren’t the same thing

DraftKings’ current moneylines have Tampa Bay at -258 and Seattle at +210. That’s a demanding price for the Lightning, even with a 4-2-0 start. Seattle arrives at 5-2-0, having followed wins at Detroit and Washington by edging Philadelphia 3-2 in a shootout Tuesday.

Bobby McMann scored in regulation and converted the deciding shootout attempt against the Flyers. It was a tighter finish than Seattle’s previous two road wins, when the Kraken scored six goals against Detroit and five against Washington.

The early betting returns help explain why the price matters. Flat one-unit moneyline bets on Seattle across its seven games this season returned a historical profit of 3.50 units. Tampa Bay won four of six, but the same approach returned just 0.21 units. Those results came at different past prices; they’re a useful reminder that a strong win-loss record and a rewarding betting price are separate things.

Tampa Bay’s stronger evaluation has a counterweight

Our grades favor the Lightning’s attack, B+ compared with Seattle’s C-, and their defense, A- compared with C. Tampa Bay’s three home wins fit that stronger assessment: the Lightning allowed one, one and two goals in those games.

Our shot projections also give Tampa Bay a shooting-volume advantage, at roughly 28 shots to Seattle’s 25. That’s a meaningful but modest gap, rather than an expectation that the Lightning will overwhelm Seattle with shots.

The recent goaltending results add a wrinkle. Joey Daccord stopped 91.3% of the shots he faced across the four appearances supplied for this season, compared with Andrei Vasilevskiy’s 88.6% over his most recent five. Daccord’s results have varied—he allowed five goals against Vegas but only one in each of two Calgary appearances—so the stronger aggregate comes with some uneven nights. Still, his recent work gives Seattle’s underdog case more substance than the winning streak alone.

Why the 6.5-goal total needs its own look

The teams bring different scoring histories to a total of 6.5. Five of Seattle’s seven games this season went over their posted totals, while four of Tampa Bay’s six went under. Those games had different thresholds, so neither record transfers neatly to this number.

The matchup evidence is mixed, too. Tampa Bay’s stronger attack gives Seattle a tougher test, but the Lightning’s defensive grade and low-scoring home results could make it harder for the Kraken to contribute. Our shot projections suggest a moderate volume of work for the goalies, while Vasilevskiy’s recent save percentage is a counterweight to assuming Tampa Bay’s defensive strength automatically produces another quiet game. At 6.5, the scoring outlook deserves more thought than simply following Seattle’s early over record.

Tampa Bay’s better grades and three stingy home performances make the stronger matchup case, but the modest projected shot gap and Daccord’s recent results complicate the idea of a runaway advantage. The most useful test is whether Seattle’s productive road attack can hold up against that home resistance. That matters to both the Kraken’s competitiveness and the 6.5-goal total—and it’s why favoring Tampa Bay’s matchup is a different judgment from calling -258 a bargain.
