Florida heads into Tuesday’s matchup with Los Angeles as a small road favorite, but the clearest strength in our team grades belongs to the Kings’ defense. That makes this an interesting test for the Panthers: can their modest attacking edge produce enough against LA when our projections give neither team much separation in shot volume?
A close price, with different strengths
DraftKings’ moneyline odds put Florida at -122 and Los Angeles at +102—a narrow favorite-underdog split. Our overall grades also put the teams on equal footing at B-, though they get there differently. Florida holds a slight edge in attack, C+ to C, while the Kings carry an A- defensive grade compared with the Panthers’ B.
The useful distinction is between creating more chances and making more of them. Our shot projections have both teams taking roughly 28 shots. With little expected separation in volume, finishing and goaltending become especially important. Florida’s attacking grade offers a plausible route to success, but LA’s stronger defensive evaluation is a meaningful counterweight to the road favorite’s case.
We also project about 15 blocked shots for the Kings and 12 for the Panthers. That adds another detail to LA’s defensive workload, though blocks alone won’t tell us how well the Kings contain Florida’s best chances.
Special teams deserve a close look
Florida’s previous game offers a concrete reason to watch penalties. In Sunday’s 3-2 overtime loss at Anaheim, all three Ducks goals came on the power play. Carter Verhaeghe scored for the Panthers, and Brad Marchand tied the game late with an extra attacker, but Florida couldn’t finish the comeback in overtime.

Los Angeles showed the other side of that equation in Saturday’s 5-4 overtime loss at San Jose. Adrian Kempe and Quinton Byfield each scored on the power play, and the Kings erased a two-goal third-period deficit. LA generated enough scoring to recover, yet still allowed five goals—a useful caution alongside its strong defensive grade.
What matters most
Florida’s strongest case is its slight attacking advantage in a matchup with nearly equal projected shooting volume. LA’s answer is the better defensive profile, with two power-play goals in its previous game showing another way it can generate offense. The Kings’ five goals conceded are the main counterweight: that defensive grade needs to translate into limiting dangerous chances, not just blocking shots. With little projected separation in shooting volume, finishing and penalty discipline could make the biggest difference.
