Stars vs. Predators preview: Dallas brings stronger grades, Nashville gets the rest edge

Dallas brings stronger team grades into Saturday’s visit to Nashville, but the schedule gives the Predators a useful counterweight. The Stars are playing for the second straight night, while Nashville had Friday off. That makes this more than a straightforward comparison of team quality: Dallas needs to turn its advantages into better hockey on a short turnaround, against an opponent our projections give a slight edge in shot volume.

Stronger grades, but a different shot outlook

Our grades put the Stars at B+ overall against Nashville’s C+. The biggest separation is in defense, where Dallas earns an A- and the Predators a C+. Dallas also has the better attacking grade, B against C. That’s a broader quality advantage, rather than an edge in just one part of the game.

The shot projections add a wrinkle: we project roughly 28 shots for Nashville and 26 for Dallas. It’s a modest difference, but it gives the Predators a route to testing the visitors’ stronger grades. Dallas may have the better overall profile without necessarily generating more shots.

We also project about 15 blocked shots for Dallas and 12 for Nashville. That fits a less comfortable workload picture for the Stars, with shot quality and finishing still central to whether Nashville can make its volume count.

What the moneyline asks of Dallas

DraftKings’ moneyline price of -135 makes Dallas a modest favorite. The stronger grades support that role, but the short turnaround and Nashville’s projected shot edge give us reasons to examine the price more closely rather than treating the grade gap as the whole story.

Neither team found much scoring in its season opener: Dallas lost 4-0 to St. Louis, and Nashville fell 3-1 to Minnesota. The more useful distinction is the schedule. Dallas has 23 hours between scheduled starts, compared with 48 for Nashville—a meaningful contrast after just one game apiece.

Where the matchup turns

Dallas has the broader quality case, especially through its stronger defensive grade. Nashville’s rest advantage and small projected shot edge make that case less comfortable at a favorite’s price. The biggest test is whether the Stars can keep Nashville’s chances manageable while getting their own attack going after the shutout. If the Predators make their extra shot volume count, the grade advantage alone won’t tell the full story.
