Kirill Kaprizov needed just 26 seconds to score in Minnesota’s win at Seattle on Saturday. Now the Wild face a Vancouver team that has lost nine straight—but at -192 on the moneyline, Minnesota’s momentum comes at a substantial price. The interesting question is how much confidence to put in that attacking edge when the Wild return to the ice on consecutive nights with Calvin Pickard in goal.
Kaprizov gives Minnesota the clearest advantage
Kaprizov’s early goal in the 5-1 win over Seattle was his 12th in 12 games. Joel Eriksson Ek also scored, and Blake Coleman added two goals. Minnesota didn’t have to rely on one scorer to end its two-game losing streak.
Still, the Wild have split their last 10 games, winning five and losing five. That’s a useful counterweight to Saturday’s emphatic result. Vancouver has won just once across its last 10 and has scored two goals or fewer in eight of those games, giving Minnesota a struggling attack to work against.
DraftKings’ moneyline price of -192 makes Minnesota a substantial favorite. Vancouver’s season also offers a reminder that a high winning percentage and a big betting return aren’t the same thing: outright bets against the Canucks have won 10 of 12 games this season, returning a profit of 1.80 units on flat one-unit bets. Minnesota’s case is easy to understand; whether its price is attractive requires more than counting Vancouver’s losses.
The goalies complicate the 6.5-goal total
There’s only one recent Minnesota appearance to assess for Pickard: he allowed five goals on 25 shots against Winnipeg. That’s too little evidence for a firm verdict, but it does temper confidence that Vancouver’s scoring struggles will automatically carry over. Jesper Wallstedt, not Pickard, made the 22 saves in Saturday’s win.
Vancouver has a more encouraging recent sample from Leevi Merilainen. If he starts, he brings a .911 save percentage across his last five appearances. He faced at least 34 shots in each of his four starts during that stretch, so the Canucks’ recent results shouldn’t be treated as a simple verdict on his play. He still allowed at least three goals in every one of those starts; his save percentage offers a counterweight to Minnesota’s attack, not a reason to dismiss the scoring risk.

At a total of 6.5, there are competing pressures. Kaprizov’s scoring and Pickard’s difficult lone appearance give the higher-scoring case substance. Vancouver’s limited recent production pushes back, as does Merilainen’s ability to handle a heavy workload if he starts. Six of each team’s last 10 games finished Under their respective totals.
Our shot projections put Minnesota at about 29 and Vancouver at about 25, with roughly three power-play opportunities apiece. That gives the Wild an expected shooting-volume advantage, while the power-play opportunities could give both attacks chances to contribute. Minnesota’s attack is the stronger part of the scoring case; Vancouver’s contribution remains the bigger question at 6.5.
What matters most
Minnesota has the more convincing attacking case, led by a scorer who’s already reached 12 goals. But its 5-5 stretch over the last 10 games is less dominant than Saturday’s score might suggest, and the change from Wallstedt to Pickard leaves little recent goaltending evidence to lean on. Merilainen’s work offers Vancouver a possible stabilizer, though his heavy shot loads have still come with goals allowed. The key distinction for bettors is between Minnesota’s attacking advantage and the reliability needed to justify paying -192: Vancouver’s quiet offense helps the Wild’s case, but Pickard still has to keep it quiet.
