Senators vs. Flyers preview: Philadelphia needs more than a close game

Philadelphia doesn’t need another competitive loss—it needs a way to score more. The Flyers are 0-6-3 and haven’t scored more than twice in any of those nine games. Ottawa brings a 6-2-0 record and Linus Ullmark’s strong recent play, yet the teams’ first meeting ended in a narrow 2-1 Senators win. For Philadelphia, the challenge is turning another game within reach into its first victory.

Close losses haven’t solved Philadelphia’s scoring problem

The Flyers lost 2-1 at Detroit on Thursday, with Andrew Copp breaking the tie with 4:38 remaining. It was another game within reach late, rather than a breakthrough. Three overtime or shootout losses already show that Philadelphia has had chances to end this start without finding the extra goal.

Ottawa also had to work for its latest win. Shane Pinto supplied the shootout winner in Thursday’s 2-1 victory over the Islanders, while Ullmark made 20 saves. The Senators’ record is stronger, but their latest result and the first Flyers meeting both show how little separation there can be in a low-scoring game.

DraftKings’ current moneyline odds make Ottawa a -155 favorite, with Philadelphia at +130. The records fit that ordering; they don’t settle whether either price is attractive. Flat one-unit moneyline bets against the Flyers have won all nine games this season and returned 6.34 units of profit. That describes Philadelphia’s winless start at those past prices, not the return available from backing Ottawa now.

The expected goalies give the 5.5 total two different pressures

Expected starters Linus Ullmark and Dan Vladar bring contrasting recent results. Ullmark has stopped 103 of 108 shots across his last five appearances, a .954 save percentage. That includes 28 saves on 29 shots against Philadelphia on October 8. For a Flyers team struggling to get beyond two goals, his recent play is a substantial obstacle.

Vladar has an .875 save percentage across his four appearances in the recent sample, though his latest outing was considerably better: 29 saves on 31 shots against Seattle on Tuesday. That improvement matters to Philadelphia’s path. Another performance like that could keep the Flyers close without requiring a sudden scoring surge.

The sportsbook total is 5.5. Philadelphia's recent scoring struggles and Ullmark’s results strengthen the case for a restrained game. Seven of the Flyers’ nine games this season have finished Under their posted totals, producing a historical profit of 5.14 units from flat one-unit Under bets. Ottawa has gone Under in six of its eight games this season, too.

The counterweight is Vladar’s uneven four-appearance sample. Ottawa could put pressure on the 5.5 total even if Philadelphia remains quiet. Our shot projections call for about 28 Ottawa shots and 25 Philadelphia shots—a modest volume advantage for the Senators, not an overwhelming shooting mismatch. That puts more emphasis on how well Vladar handles those shots than on a large gap in expected volume.

What matters most in the rematch

Ottawa brings the stronger results and the better recent goaltending sample. Philadelphia’s clearest route is to keep the game tight behind Vladar, but it still needs to break the scoring ceiling that has held it back in every game. A better night from Vladar would help the Flyers stay competitive and reinforce the low-scoring case at 5.5; Ullmark’s recent form makes finding the extra Philadelphia goal the tougher part of that plan. Keeping Ottawa within reach and producing enough to beat Ottawa remain two different tasks.
